other uses for clinical massage

Dogs with orthopaedic issues or muscular/soft tissue injuries are not the only ones who could benefit from clinical massage. Expand the selections below to find out more.

+ Working, Sporting or Competition Dogs

As with athletic humans, dogs that take part in strenuous sporting activities can be susceptible to injury. Clinical massage can hep to reduce pain, improve movement and function and maintain condition. It can also help with rehabilitation after injury, surgery or illness.

Changes to or a drop in your dog's performance could indicate that your dog could benefit from massage.

Signs of a potential injury in a working, sporting or competition dog could include:

  • sitting crooked
  • knocking poles
  • low concentration
  • avoiding obstacles or exiting weaves
  • shortened stride
  • slower times

+ Senior dogs

It is a fact that, as with us humans, senior dogs may need a little more 'TLC' as they age. Bodies begin to wear and tear and looking after them becomes ever more important. Canine massage can help to keep senior dogs comfortable and could even slow the progression of degeneration whilst maintaining condition as much as possible.

Your senior dog may benefit from a clinical massage if they:

  • are slowing down
  • shake or tremble
  • find shifting from lying to sitting difficult
  • have difficulty getting in or out of the car
  • have difficulty negotiating the stairs
  • suffer from an existing orthopaedic condition
  • tend to pace or find it difficult to settle
  • are grumpy, miserable or depressed

+ Other dogs that may benefit from massage

  • Clinical massage is also suitable for tripawds/amputees and for long term non-invasive care.

  • Anxious and nervous dogs, reactive dogs and dogs with trust issues could also benefit. All of these cases would have associated muscle tension and so massage would assist in relaxing their muscles and releasing any tension to promote a calmer more relaxed mood and a gradual build of trust.

“I saw a marked improvement in Cali's anxiety when visiting the vets.  For the first time in 2 years she did not shake on the table!  Claire was wonderful and friendly, but above all helped our anxious dog, Cali, to relax and enjoy a good massage that helped release some of the tension she was holding on to. I would thoroughly recommend Claire to anyone looking for a canine massage therapist.”
